Howard County Executive announces progress on high school in Elkridge

On Wednesday, County Executive Calvin Ball revealed that Howard County has successfully secured the land for the construction of High School #14, to be situated at Troy Park in Elkridge.

Following a thorough search for the optimal site, county officials concluded that this location was ideal for the future school, as detailed in a press release. The acquisition of this land was facilitated through recent purchases that fulfill state land conversion mandates.

Since the county already owns Troy Park, this decision enables the use of public land to deliver significant benefits for students while addressing the long-term educational needs of the area.

“With the collaboration of our community, various task forces, school leaders, and the Board of Education, we have made substantial progress in catering to the requirements of our students and families,” stated Ball. “Today marks another vital milestone in our commitment to enhancing our schools with the advancement of High School #14 in Elkridge.”

Ball emphasized that this location strikes a balance between saving taxpayers’ money and minimizing community impact.

Next week, the County Executive will present legislation to the Howard County Council to transfer 48.64 acres of undeveloped land at Troy Park to the Howard County Board of Education. This move will facilitate the integration of the school into the long-range planning framework of the school system. Subsequently, the design and development phase for the school will commence.

This initiative is part of Ball’s broader effort to modernize and enhance the Howard County Public Schools.

Meg Ricks, a member of the Howard County Board of Education, expressed gratitude to all those who advocated tirelessly for decades to bring a high school to Elkridge.

“The acquisition of this land will serve not just the Elkridge community but will also benefit the entire school system and the county at large,” Ricks remarked.
