GLEN BURNIE, Md — Mark Bedell, the Superintendent of Anne Arundel County Public Schools, has been honored with the title of 2027 Maryland Superintendent of the Year, which allows him to potentially represent the state on a national stage.

Bedell’s journey as superintendent commenced in August 2022, and since that time, the school district has undergone substantial transformation.

He attributes the achievements during his initial years in office as instrumental in earning this prestigious recognition.

“When the data was released at the end of my third year, I distinctly remember sharing with our staff and board members that I believe we are ahead of the schedule I initially expected for this period. The progress we’ve made has been remarkable, unlike anything I’ve experienced in my career,” Bedell remarked.

Since 2022, the district has reported an upswing in student proficiency, enhanced college and career readiness, as well as a decrease in absenteeism rates.

“Our students are not only excelling academically but are also Gaining social and emotional skills,” Bedell affirmed.

Additionally, the district has made significant strides in teacher recruitment, successfully lowering the number of unfilled teacher positions from 283 to a mere 16.

Nonetheless, Bedell acknowledges that certain challenges remain.

“I would note that discipline referrals are currently higher compared to when I took office. Much of this increase can be traced back to the aftermath of COVID, yet even as we have worked to reduce those numbers in recent years, the overall figures still exceed what they were in 2022,” Bedell explained.

Receiving this award enables Bedell to represent Maryland nationally, an opportunity he describes as a dream come true.

“I believe this recognition will pave the way for even more advancements for educators in this county, regardless of whether I am state or potentially national superintendent of the year. I genuinely appreciate this moment, as it feels surreal and was never something I envisioned in my professional journey,” Bedell shared.

Despite the accolades, he reassures parents and the community of his commitment to continually uplift the district’s standards.

“I want the community to understand that they are part of a highly competitive school district. Having worked in four different districts, I can say with confidence that many might not fully grasp how fortunate they are in Anne Arundel County. I feel that sometimes this is taken for granted, but we possess a school district with a B+ rating, and my ambition is to elevate that to an A-minus level,” Bedell expressed.

Looking ahead, Bedell indicates that more improvements will be forthcoming, with particular emphasis on enhancing special education and broadening access to Advanced Placement courses.
