To uncover the comfort foods Americans crave during chilly winter days and nights, Surety First Insurance Services, based in California, examined a year’s worth of Google Trends data. This analysis focused on the most searched winter comfort foods across the United States.
The findings revealed that regional preferences play a significant role in dinner choices during the colder months, although some trends were consistent nationwide.
The standout winter comfort food is wonton soup, which enjoys immense popularity in colder states and those with strong Asian culinary traditions. It led searches in states like California, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, and Washington.
French onion soup, a filling dish featuring a rich broth, caramelized onions, and melted cheese, is the top comfort food in six states: Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin.
Green bean casserole, a beloved holiday dish, has found year-round popularity in five states: Arizona, Idaho, Iowa, New Mexico, and Texas.
Meanwhile, baked potato soup, loaded with cheese, bacon, and chives, is a winter favorite for residents in Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma.
Other notable comfort foods from the survey include:
- White chicken chili — Michigan, Utah, and Wyoming
- Southern mac and cheese — Georgia, Maryland, and South Carolina
- Loaded mashed potatoes — Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi
- Chicken and dumplings — Arkansas, Tennessee, and West Virginia
