Renowned Emmy Award-winning actress and producer Lena Waithe is set to make her debut in playwriting and theatrical performance in Baltimore with her new production titled “trinity.” The local entertainment scene is uniting to honor and support this exciting milestone.
The premiere of “trinity” will take place at Baltimore Center Stage (BCS) on February 12, running until March 8. Esteemed personalities from the world of entertainment—including John Legend, Lala Anthony, Jacqueline Woodson, Issa Rae, Debbie Allen, and Iyanla Vanzant—are stepping up to show their support by purchasing tickets and organizing various events. One of these influential figures is Tabitha Brown.
Brown, an actress, author, and prominent cultural figure, is committed to ensuring that the Baltimore community can access this important production. She has generously acquired 100 tickets for the Friday, February 13, 7:30 p.m. show, which will be distributed free of charge to local residents. These complimentary tickets can be picked up at the Baltimore Center Stage lobby on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 5:30 p.m., prior to the 7:30 p.m. performance. Each individual is entitled to a maximum of two tickets.
In addition to the performance, several entertainment personalities will engage in post-show discussions with the cast and creative team, providing audiences a unique insight into the artistic process behind “trinity.” Among the guests, Issa Rae will participate in the talkback on February 18, followed by Iyanla Vanzant and Debbie Allen on February 21, with additional guests to be announced soon.
Additionally, Waithe and Center Stage are organizing special events such as HBCU/Divine 9 Night on February 18 and Community Night on February 20.
Lena Waithe is best known for creating the Showtime series “The Chi” and for her acting and writing roles in Netflix’s acclaimed “Master of None.” She notably made history as the first African-American woman to receive the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, thanks to her standout episode “Thanksgiving” from “Master of None.”
“trinity” is directed by Stevie Walker-Webb, who serves as the artistic director of BCS, featuring Waithe alongside Courtney Sauls and Fedna Jaquet in the cast. This innovative play unfolds entirely within a single room, exploring the interactions of three characters as they navigate the boundaries between fantasy and reality, playing out scenarios they are too apprehensive to confront in everyday life.
Walker-Webb and Waithe recently spoke about the production in a discussion shared on Waithe’s Instagram. The director characterized the play as a “deep exploration of love, longing, and the complexities of maintaining love.” Waithe elaborated on her choice to premiere in Baltimore, emphasizing the influence of Walker-Webb’s presence in the community.
“Your artistic journey led you to become the artistic director at Baltimore Center Stage, within this historic venue, and that’s fundamentally why Baltimore was chosen,” Waithe noted. “Our artistic visions resonate with each other, and an essential aspect of your mission is Baltimore, which integrates with mine.”
