We present a carefully compiled list of the latest restaurant and bar closures in the D.C. area, with updates provided every month. Did we overlook a closing? Let us know!
Adams Morgan: The acclaimed Tail Up Goat, which boasts a Michelin star, is set to close its doors on Saturday, December 20, concluding nearly ten years of operation. Chef Jon Sybert and his wife, Jill Tyler, launched this Mediterranean-inspired eatery in 2016, and it was awarded its prestigious Michelin star when the D.C. Michelin Guide debuted in 2017. The owners have recently disclosed plans to transform the space into a counter-service restaurant, named Rye Bunny, anticipated to open in spring 2026, which they believe is a more viable option given the current economic conditions. You can still book a farewell dinner for Tail Up Goat’s $135-per-person prix fixe or a la carte menu online. 1827 Adams Mill Road
Bethesda: The beloved Henry’s Sweet Retreat & Bakery will shut down on Sunday, December 14, as reported by Bethesda Today. This charming candy shop and bakery, which has been delighting customers since 2016 in Woodmont Triangle, is known for its delicious ice cream, fudge, pies, cakes, and cookies. Its colorful walls are lined with jars filled with jelly beans, sour gummies, licorice, and edible Lego candies. According to the publication, co-owners Patty and Tom Craver were “ready for a change”; after an unsuccessful sale earlier in the year coupled with an upcoming rent increase, closure became unavoidable. 4823 St. Elmo Avenue, Bethesda, Maryland
Downtown: After 15 years, Nerds & Nibblers, a beloved spot for breakfast, sandwiches, salads, and coffee, has closed as of early December. 1451 L Street NW
Foggy Bottom: After serving George Washington University students for over a decade, the daytime cafe Poppabox has permanently closed its doors. This popular spot for bubble tea, ube milk soft serve, and BLTs announced its closure on Friday, December 5. However, its Instagram suggests that a new establishment, Downtowner Delicatessen Cafe, is set to open soon at the same location. 1928 I Street NW
Gaithersburg: Two Story Chimney Ciderworks, known for its artisanal ciders crafted from local orchards, will be closing its tasting room on Sunday, December 21. This favorite destination, which opened in the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve in 2021, is shifting focus to prioritize family time over the bustling market environment, as conveyed through a social media post. 7115 Damascus Road, Gaithersburg, Maryland
H Street: Paste & Rind, which started as a local cheese company during the pandemic, will close on Sunday, December 28, after nearly three fruitful years. This charming 24-seat cheese counter, located in the former Dio Wine Bar, offered an inviting setting for cheese plates, charcuterie, and wine pairings. Owner Kara McGrath shared that this decision comes after careful and heartfelt consideration. The stand at the Trinidad Market will continue to operate until early 2026 to sell off remaining inventory. The last Trolley Club boxes will be available for pickup or delivery during the first week of January. 904 H Street NE
H Street: Bullfrog Bagels announced its closure on H Street at the end of November, although the team is currently working on a new location along the same Northeast corridor (with “more details coming soon”). The D.C. mini-chain also operates in Eastern Market, Brookland, and Union Station. 1341 H Street NE
