As winter arrives in Montgomery County, Maryland, the City of Gaithersburg celebrates the season with its enchanting drive-thru Winter Lights Festival. This event invites visitors to embark on a 3.5-mile drive through Seneca Creek State Park, showcasing over 450 dazzling light displays along with beautifully lit trees guiding you through magical surroundings. Along the route, guests can experience various themes, including Fairytale Woods, Victorian Village, Mermaid Lagoon, and Fantasy.
Things to Know Before You Go
Now in its 31st year, the Winter Lights Festival will be open every night from November 27 to December 31, with a closure on December 25. The festival operates as follows: from Sunday to Thursday, it opens at 6 p.m. with the final entry at 9 p.m., while on Fridays and Saturdays, it also opens at 6 p.m., but the last admission is at 10 p.m. Visitors should plan for about 25 to 30 minutes of driving time in light traffic, although busier nights may extend this to 1.5 to 2 hours. To enhance your experience, it is advisable to arrive around 5:30 p.m., obey all traffic regulations to prevent congestion, and have your tickets prepared for entrance into the park.

The park is conveniently located at 11950 Clopper Road, Gaithersburg, only a short drive west of the I-270 intersection. Recent enhancements have made access easier through the Watkins Mill Interchange on I-270.
The Winter Lights event occurs regardless of weather conditions. If snow or ice is predicted, it is advisable to check the city’s website for the latest updates.
