Montgomery County Wineries Take Center Stage at the 2026 Maryland Governor’s Cup Wine Competition

Each year, the Maryland Governor’s Cup Wine Competition honors the finest offerings from the state’s vibrant wine industry. Hosted by the Maryland Wineries Association, this prestigious event emphasizes exceptional wines crafted from locally sourced fruit, reflecting the diversity and skill found within the region. In Montgomery County, Maryland, the competition accolades focus on the wineries and cideries along the Tastemakers Trail that excelled in this year’s contest.

Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard Recognized

A long-time favorite in Montgomery County, Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard stood out in this year’s competition, securing awards in multiple categories. The 2025 Circe Red Blend was awarded Best in Class and also received a Double Gold, while the 2025 Petit Manseng, 2023 Cabernet Franc Reserve, and 2023 Comus each garnered Double Gold honors as well. Their 2023 Evoe achieved Gold, and the 2025 Unoaked Chardonnay was recognized with a Bronze medal.

Windridge Vineyards Shines

Windridge Vineyards in Darnestown made a remarkable impression by winning the Best In Class | Governor’s Cup Award alongside several additional medals this year. Their 2025 White Blend excelled in the Best in Class for a red varietal and took home the Best in Show title, beautifully exhibiting the county’s unique terroir. Notable Double Gold awards were given to the 2023 Petit Verdot and the 2025 Portrayal. Additionally, the 2021 Black Label Blanc de Blancs won a Silver medal, while their 2025 Albariño and 2023 Chardonnay earned Bronze medals.

The Crossvines | Poolesville, MD

The Crossvines Expands Horizons

Beyond its offerings as a winery, The Crossvines serves as a teaching facility, featuring a custom grape-crushing area and its own bistro. This year, their NV Hit It Hard Cider “Strawbidie” was honored with the Best in Class and also received a Double Gold award. Additionally, their 2024 Merlot and 2025 Hit It Hard Cider were awarded Silver medals.

61 Vineyard | Damascus, MD

61 Vineyard’s Sustainable Focus

In Damascus, 61 Vineyard, a family-operated establishment dedicated to sustainable practices, received recognition with Silver medals for the 2024 Rolling Ridge, 2024 Petit Verdot, and 2025 Pleasant Plains. In the Bronze category, their 2025 Drytown and 2025 Pleasant Plains also received accolades.

Metzger Winery’s Unique Offerings

This boutique winery, known for selling its products through various pop-up venues across Poolesville, won a bronze medal for its 2024 Autumn’s Revenge.
