Dawson initiated a district-wide listening tour at Forrest Park High School on Tuesday, coinciding with the Maryland State Department of Education’s release of literacy results for each school district across the state.
During his first stop, he briefly highlighted the results, indicating that the district has demonstrated steady advancements in both literacy and mathematics.
“We are continuing to see consistent growth in literacy and in mathematics when it comes to the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program, commonly referred to as MCAP,” Dawson stated.
Over the last four years, the school system has consistently improved its literacy skills while also enhancing math proficiency. Baltimore City Schools has surpassed the statewide average for literacy growth, achieving its highest proficiency rate since 2017.
Nevertheless, Dawson recognized that there is still work to be done for the district to achieve a higher ranking within the state.
“While we celebrate this momentum today, we remain clear-eyed and focused that we still have a long way to go to reach our ultimate goal of becoming the premier school district in the state of Maryland,” Dawson remarked.
Following his discussion of the new data, Dawson engaged with community leaders, parents, and students at Forrest Park, encouraging them to share their expectations for the forthcoming school year and beyond.
“We want to ensure that every child in the Baltimore school district is career-ready, future-ready, and prepared for the world,” Dawson emphasized.
This listening tour is part of Dawson’s 100-day entry plan, aiming to define his priorities for the district.
