ELKTON, Md. — While he may appear to be an ordinary motorist, the individual behind the wheel is far from typical.
Law enforcement identified him as a suspected vehicle thief who allegedly stole a company truck from a repair and service business adjacent to the Flying J Travel Center in Elkton.
“An officer was dispatched to the scene and took the initial report. During this process, it became apparent that the vehicle was equipped with onboard GPS as well as a dash camera,” remarked Elkton Police Sgt. Thomas Saulsbury.
Busted by the dash camera
The GPS data indicated that the vehicle had traveled from Maryland to Pennsylvania, leading police in Philadelphia to eventually locate it abandoned after it had collided with two other vehicles and a bridge before becoming immobilized.
“While he was in Philadelphia, he wrecked the vehicle multiple times,” noted Saulsbury. “Surveillance footage suggested he might have been under the influence of drugs, which leads us to believe that he may have stolen the truck to facilitate his drug use.”
Elkton police subsequently shared images of the suspected thief and issued a warrant for his arrest upon discovering his identity.
“He ended up being apprehended in Fredericksburg, Virginia by another law enforcement agency,” Saulsbury explained. “They stopped him for a separate theft, and they found he was in possession of illegal drugs at the time.”
The company that owned the truck now faces not only the loss of their vehicle but also a significant operational setback, as it was one of only two used for making service calls, thereby halving their capacity to conduct business.
As for the alleged thief, identified as 36-year-old Jeremy Grace from Middletown, Delaware, he is currently in custody in Virginia and is awaiting extradition to Maryland. He faces a felony theft charge related to his actions that were thoroughly captured on camera.
“I doubt he realized it,” Saulsbury commented. “He probably just picked the wrong vehicle to steal.”
