GLEN BURNIE, Md. — This Thursday marks the much-anticipated return of the Glen Burnie Farmers Market, featuring over 30 vendors, live musical performances, food trucks, and complimentary ice cream for attendees on opening day.

The market will take place every Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. through September 24.

This year’s market season has been extended compared to previous years, running from June all the way through the end of September. Kayleigh De La Puente, Town Center Revitalization Manager for the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation, explained that the longer season is a direct response to community feedback.

“The extension of the market season was largely driven by community demand. We received numerous suggestions after last season, with both vendors and attendees expressing the desire for more markets in September and an earlier start in June. We listened to that feedback and are thrilled to announce this expanded timeframe for the season,” De La Puente remarked.

One of the returning favorites is Schmidt Family Farm, renowned for its fresh strawberries, honey, and various produce. Nick Hovaker, Daily Operations Manager at Schmidt Family Farm, shared that the market provides a vital link between local farmers and the community.

“It serves as a fantastic venue for us to sell our produce to the community, which is conveniently located right here amidst businesses and apartments. It truly feels wonderful to come here and share what we grow,” Hovaker stated.

Heather Schmidt, part of the Schmidt Family Farm, expressed that the farmers market holds special significance for her family.

“Anne Arundel County has a rich agricultural history, yet in areas like Pasadena and Glen Burnie, the number of farms has diminished. Carrying on my family’s tradition, which dates back to 1921, makes this experience all the more meaningful,” Schmidt reflected.

Stacey-Marie Williams, owner of Iconic Bakery, emphasized that the market fosters connections that transcend mere transactions.

“The farmers market has cultivated a welcoming space for small businesses like mine, allowing us to engage with neighbors and patrons alike. In today’s digital age, enjoying an open-air market to meet local farmers, bakers, and fellow entrepreneurs is a truly refreshing experience,” Williams noted.

Looking back on last year’s season, Williams shared her hopes for growth in the current year.

“Many people were unaware of the farmers market last year. It’s heartwarming to watch the collaboration among vendors, who support one another and showcase their wonderful products. I’m incredibly grateful to be part of this experience, and I believe it’s a fantastic opportunity,” Williams remarked.

In addition to fresh produce and baked goods, this season’s market will also feature live music, performances, and 17 food trucks. The opening day on Thursday will be particularly festive, with free ice cream available for all guests.
