New Member Joins Prince George’s County Council: What This Means for the Community

Share

The Prince George’s County Council has returned to its full capacity of 11 members following the appointment of Danielle Hunter. This vacancy arose when Wala Blegay transitioned from her position representing the 6th District to occupy an at-large seat.

Wala Blegay was elected to represent the 6th District in 2022, but she was appointed by her colleagues to the at-large seat that became available when Calvin Hawkins stepped down last month.

Hunter was selected from nearly twenty candidates vying for the position, which primarily serves the central region of the county. In addition to her new role, she has been working as the director of appointments for County Executive Aisha Braveboy, assisting in filling various roles within the executive team.

During a virtual meeting held on Friday afternoon, County Executive Braveboy expressed her strong support for Hunter’s appointment.

“It’s essential to have someone who will engage actively with the community,” said Braveboy. “Danielle has consistently demonstrated her commitment to the community, particularly with our seniors and young individuals. For example, earlier this winter, she provided winter coats for elementary school children in the District Heights area. Danielle dedicates her time, resources, and love to her community.”

Candidates for the position were allotted two minutes each to address the council, although not all of them attended the meeting.

“I am eager to begin representing the residents of District 6,” Hunter stated passionately when it was her turn to address the council. “I am genuinely excited about the future of Prince George’s County and look forward to working with each of you as we strive to enhance our community.”

Council Chair Krystal Oriadha remarked after the council had met privately to discuss the candidates that there is a palpable commitment among them to serve the county’s interests.

“Everyone who chooses to serve in this capacity understands the challenges involved. We deeply appreciate those willing to step up for such an important role,” Oriadha noted.

The complete list of applicants is available online.
