GLEN BURNIE, Md. — On Christmas Eve, a shooting involving ICE resulted in injuries for two individuals in Glen Burnie.
Police were dispatched to the 500 block of West Court at 10:51 a.m. following reports of the shooting.
According to officials, ICE agents were engaged in a “targeted immigration enforcement operation” when they approached a white van that attempted to drive into them.
The agents responded by firing at the vehicle, which then sped away and ultimately stopped in a nearby wooded area.
The driver of the van, identified as Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins, sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital. Authorities report that he is currently in stable condition. A second individual, known as Solomon Antonio Serrano-Esquivel, who was outside the van, incurred minor injuries and was also taken to a hospital for treatment.
Fortunately, no ICE agents suffered serious injuries, as confirmed by officials.
Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, stated that Sousa-Martins is an undocumented immigrant from Portugal, while Serrano-Esquivel is undocumented from El Salvador.
As reported by an ICE spokesperson to WMAR-2 News, Sousa-Martins has been living in the United States without legal status for the past 17 years, having entered the country in December 2008. He violated the conditions of his visa by remaining in the U.S. after its expiration in February 2009.
McLaughlin remarked, “This incident, which is still under investigation, occurs amidst a surge in extreme anti-ICE rhetoric and misinformation propagated by politicians, media, activists, and violent agitators. As a result, there has been a staggering 1,150% increase in assaults on ICE officers. Our dedicated agents put their lives on the line every day to protect American communities by apprehending and deporting illegal immigrants. Ongoing encouragement for illegal immigrants and violent activists to resist ICE only heightens the risk of violence; this extremist rhetoric must cease.”
The investigation into the shooting will be led by the Anne Arundel County Police Department, while the FBI will examine the assault on the ICE agents. An internal investigation by ICE will also take place.
Governor Wes Moore responded to the situation on social media, affirming that his office is informed about the incident.
He stated, “As we learn more about the events that unfolded, we will stay in close communication with local officials and are ready to provide support to the community.”
I am aware of the ICE-involved shooting that occurred earlier today in Glen Burnie.
As more information surfaces about the incident, we will continue to connect with local officials and are prepared to support the community.
