Tre Johnson, the distinguished former offensive lineman for Washington who later transitioned into a role as a history teacher in Maryland, passed away on Sunday at the age of 54.

His wife, Irene, shared the heartbreaking news through a Facebook post, revealing that he had died unexpectedly while on a short family getaway.

“With great sorrow, I announce that my husband, Tre Johnson, has passed away suddenly and unexpectedly during a brief family trip,” she wrote. “His four children, Chloe, EJ, EZ, and Eden, along with our extended family and friends, are devastated and in shock.”

Johnson gained recognition at Temple University before being chosen by Washington in the 1994 draft. He was part of the team until 2000, played a season with Cleveland in 2001, and then returned to complete his final year in 2002. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 328 pounds, he was honored as a Pro Bowl selection in 1999.

Following his football career, he dedicated himself to teaching history at the Landon School located in Bethesda, Maryland. His wife mentioned that recent health challenges had led him to take a leave of absence from his teaching position.
