Residents of the Balmoral neighborhood situated near Upper Marlboro, Maryland, are sharing their apprehensions regarding a hazardous intersection where three lives were lost in a recent crash.
Locals in the Balmoral community have expressed concerns for several years about the intersection connecting Route 301 and Governors Park Lane. In light of a tragic incident that resulted in three fatalities over the weekend, they are urging state officials to implement necessary changes.
A makeshift memorial has been established along Route 301, close to the entrance of the neighborhood. Three wooden crosses, adorned with flowers and teddy bears, commemorate the three individuals who tragically lost their lives on Sunday morning.
According to Maryland State Police, the accident occurred around 12:45 a.m. when a Tesla executed a left turn from Route 301 onto Governors Park Lane and failed to yield to a southbound Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The motorcycle collided with the passenger side of the Tesla.
Authorities believe that a third vehicle subsequently struck one of the motorcycle’s passengers and then fled the scene. While three individuals died, another was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Neighbors Highlight Long-Standing Safety Concerns
James White, a resident of the Balmoral neighborhood, commented that worries regarding the intersection are far from new.
“It’s really tough. This is definitely a situation that needs fixing,” White remarked.
He shared that his own family has been impacted by a prior accident at the same intersection.
“Our daughter was also involved in an accident right there, so for us it feels like a full cycle because we’ve already experienced a crash in the exact same location,” White added.
Another resident, Willie Smalls, labeled the intersection as perilous.
“It’s genuinely frightening,” Smalls expressed.
Smalls highlighted that drivers coming into and out of the neighborhood often face risky situations.
“I’d much rather stop than take a chance,” Smalls remarked.
He indicated that the community has been advocating for the installation of a traffic signal for numerous years.
State Officials Confirm Traffic Signal Plans
The Maryland State Highway Administration informed WTOP that the design phase for a traffic signal at this intersection is nearly 90% complete, with construction anticipated to commence by year’s end, depending on weather conditions.
Officials mentioned that once the official police report regarding Sunday’s incident is finalized, traffic engineers will evaluate the intersection further to determine if additional safety enhancements are warranted.
This response coincides with residents’ ongoing pleas for reforms at this dangerous intersection.
Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy stated that local leaders are actively pushing for improvements on state roads and are committed to considering the residents’ feedback.
“We value the input from residents, as it strengthens our arguments when we approach the state for additional resources,” Braveboy stated.
Authorities Urge Caution Following Recent Fatal Accidents
The collision on Route 301 was one of two fatal motorcycle accidents that occurred within days in Prince George’s County. Another incident resulted in three fatalities on Tuesday night in a three-vehicle crash on New Hampshire Avenue in Adelphi.
“One crash is already too many. Every life lost is too many,” asserted Braveboy.
This year, Prince George’s County has seen 21 fatal accidents, as reported by officials.
The county is in the process of creating a Road to Zero Action Plan, set to be unveiled this fall, which aims to focus on engineering solutions, educational efforts, enforcement measures, emergency response strategies, and technology to reduce road fatalities.
Prince George’s County Police Chief George Nader emphasized that preventing tragic accidents will require a collaborative effort from the whole community.
“It involves all of us coming together with our communities to change driving behaviors,” Nader explained.
He also acknowledged the devastating impact fatal crashes have on families.
“One of the most challenging tasks officers face, whether it’s a homicide or a fatal crash, is to go to a family’s home in the middle of the night and deliver the heartbreaking news that they will never see their loved one again,” Nader remarked.
Maryland State Police Superintendent Col. Michael Jackson commented on the preventable nature of many accidents.
“The reason for this is straightforward: these accidents are often avoidable,” Jackson stated.
Additionally, he cautioned against the dangers of distracted driving.
“Taking your eyes off the road for just a couple of seconds to check a text can result in traveling nearly 100 yards blind,” Jackson cautioned.
Officials are reminding drivers to slow down, maintain focus while driving, and always wear their seat belts.
