Approximately 100 individuals attended the event around 2 a.m. on Saturday, according to the Prince William County police.
“There appeared to be some kind of altercation that escalated. During this incident, our victim was shot in the upper body,” stated Lt. Jonathan Perok.
Authorities are urging anyone who was present, or anyone who may have video footage, to reach out to the Prince William County Police as the investigation progresses.
“Given the number of participants, we are confident that there are individuals who possess information that could assist us in identifying the shooter,” Perok added.
The teenage boy was not the only victim of gun violence at car meetups over the weekend.
In a separate incident, police from Prince George’s County responded to a meetup in the 2300 block of Beaver Road in Landover after a woman arrived at the University of Maryland Capital Region Hospital early Sunday with a gunshot wound.
“People have been injured and killed at car meetups. Despite multiple warnings from the Chief, individuals continue to expose themselves to risk. Property and vehicles sustain damage, and many attendees engage in illegal drug activities and possess weapons,” stated Prince George’s County police in a social media announcement regarding the incident.
Law enforcement throughout the region is reminding community members to stay aware while attending such gatherings.
“Usually, we receive notifications of these events and attempt to disperse crowds when we are aware of them. However, I don’t believe we were informed about this particular meetup prior to the shooting.”
Car enthusiasts are encouraged to participate in events sanctioned by local organizations, which typically have better security measures in place.
“We strongly suggest that those who appreciate cars and the automotive scene attend organized and structured events,” Perok advised.
