Montgomery County, MD — Montgomery County continues to strengthen its reputation as one of the nation’s leading innovation and life sciences hubs, with several major companies expanding operations, relocating headquarters, and investing billions into new facilities across the county.

These expansions, announced throughout 2025 and early 2026, span industries including biotechnology, defense technology, manufacturing, and IT consulting—bringing hundreds of new jobs and reinforcing the county’s position as a top destination for high-growth employers.


AstraZeneca Expands with Major Biotech Investment in Gaithersburg and Rockville

One of the largest developments involves global pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, which announced a massive $2 billion investment in Maryland. As part of that effort, the company is expanding its presence in Montgomery County with a new clinical manufacturing facility in Gaithersburg.

The expansion builds on a recently opened $300 million cell therapy facility in Rockville and is expected to create approximately 100 new jobs while enhancing the company’s research and development footprint locally.

The move further cements Montgomery County’s position as one of the top biopharma clusters in the United States.


X-energy Opens New Headquarters, Plans Hundreds of High-Skill Jobs

Nuclear energy and advanced reactor developer X-energy is also deepening its roots in Montgomery County.

The company is consolidating its Rockville offices into a new 125,000-square-foot headquarters in Gaithersburg. The project will retain its existing workforce of 260 employees while creating more than 525 new high-skill jobs over the next six years.

This expansion highlights the county’s growing importance in energy innovation and advanced technology sectors.


Samsung Biologics Establishes First U.S. Manufacturing Site in Rockville

In a major international investment, South Korea-based Samsung Biologics is acquiring a Rockville manufacturing facility previously owned by GlaxoSmithKline.

The acquisition marks Samsung Biologics’ first U.S. manufacturing site and will retain more than 500 existing employees.

The move underscores Montgomery County’s global appeal as a center for life sciences and biomanufacturing.


AeroVironment Opens New Research and Manufacturing Facility in Germantown

Defense and aerospace technology company AeroVironment opened a new 57,000-square-foot facility in Germantown, representing a $12.5 million investment.

The new site is expected to create over 200 high-tech jobs and increase the company’s Maryland workforce to approximately 600 employees.

This expansion strengthens Germantown’s role as a growing center for defense and advanced manufacturing.


Corporate Headquarters and Tech Firms Relocate to Bethesda and Rockville

Several companies have also relocated their headquarters to Montgomery County.

Bernstein Management Corporation moved its headquarters from Washington, D.C., to Bethesda, bringing 50 full-time employees into the county. Meanwhile, IT consulting firm Powersolv relocated from Reston, Virginia, to Rockville and plans to add an additional 20 jobs over the next three years.

Companies cited access to talent and proximity to the region’s expanding technology corridor as key reasons for their move.


Manufacturing Growth Continues with Liatris Expansion in Rockville

Advanced materials manufacturer Liatris is expanding its pilot facility in Rockville.

The project is expected to create at least 15 direct jobs, more than 100 indirect jobs, and generate an estimated $20 million in economic impact over the next three years.


Montgomery County Strengthens Its Position as a Top Business Destination

Despite economic challenges across the region, Montgomery County continues attracting major employers due to its highly skilled workforce, established biotech ecosystem, and strong infrastructure.

With additional corporate projects still in development, officials say the county remains a leading destination for companies seeking innovation, talent, and long-term growth opportunities.
