Braving icy waters for a good cause, residents from Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia will once again head to National Harbor this winter for the annual Chesapeake Climate Action Network Polar Bear Plunge. The long-running event brings together hundreds of participants committed to climate action while embracing one of the coldest traditions of the season.
The plunge, held along the Potomac River waterfront, challenges participants to raise funds in support of regional climate advocacy efforts before taking a quick dip into the frigid water. The event has grown into one of the most recognizable winter fundraisers in the area, drawing individuals, families, and teams from across the DMV.
Organizers say the plunge highlights the importance of protecting cold winters and addressing climate change at the local level. Funds raised support education, clean-energy initiatives, and community-based climate solutions impacting neighborhoods throughout Maryland and the greater Chesapeake region.
Spectators are also encouraged to attend, with the event offering a festive atmosphere along the harbor as plungers cheer each other on. Whether jumping in or watching from shore, the Polar Bear Plunge continues to serve as a reminder that collective local action can make a meaningful difference.
