KEYS Empowers is set to distribute food packages to individuals and families in need this Saturday, July 25, beginning at 11 a.m. at the future site of the KEYS Community Healing Village. The event will continue until supplies last.
Based in Baltimore, KEYS Empowers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to healing, education, and leadership. Their community-focused programs encompass a variety of services, including educational initiatives, youth mentorship, mental health support, medical assistance, and emergency aid.
“Our food distribution efforts aim to eliminate the stress associated with food insecurity, allowing families to cultivate healthy, stable homes,” stated Mujahid Muhammad, founder of KEYS Empowers. “While we are still in the construction phase of the KEYS Community Healing Village, our commitment to the community is already in motion. This initiative represents an early vision of the Healing Village as a space filled with nourishment, dignity, connection, and compassion.”
This weekend’s food distribution is not the first of its kind for KEYS Empowers; similar events have occurred previously, including one on May 30. The future Healing Village is strategically positioned in a food desert, making the battle against food insecurity a crucial component of its mission. The organization aims to provide meals to 300 families each day throughout the year, and this temporary meal distribution effort is intended to forge lasting connections with the families it serves.
As a member of the Baltimore City school board, Muhammad recognizes the significant impact of the free meal program on students. Recently, KEYS Empowers also launched a culinary therapy program that began on June 8. The goal is to support students during the summer months when they typically do not have access to free meals, highlighting the connection between food insecurity and challenges related to learning and mental health.
“What started as a community initiative has transformed into a powerful movement aimed at unlocking human potential through access, compassion, and connection,” Muhammad remarked. “We are creating a central hub where daily efforts revolve around engaging, educating, feeding, and empowering community members who most need this support. We are excited to cook alongside the same families we serve.”
In addition to ensuring families in the area receive essential food supplies, KEYS Empowers is introducing a new Community Ambassador Program. This initiative aims to identify local talent, empowering them to expand outreach, mobilize volunteers, and strengthen community connections. Those selected as ambassadors will receive leadership development, training, resources, and backing to enhance neighborhood involvement in service and volunteer projects.
“Our neighborhoods are already home to incredible leaders who care deeply about their communities,” Muhammad noted. “Our goal is to invest in these individuals, providing them with additional tools to amplify the impactful work they are already undertaking. These ambassadors possess unparalleled understanding of their communities, and together, we will foster even greater change.”
The overarching vision for the KEYS Community Healing Village is to be a nurturing environment that facilitates connection, growth, healing, and opportunity. By recognizing the profound trauma that generations of marginalization can inflict, the organization aspires to provide a supportive space for all community members to learn, rebuild, and find belonging.
