According to a recent 2026 report from the personal finance platform WalletHub, four communities in Montgomery County, Maryland, have been recognized as some of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States.
Germantown, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring, and Rockville have all secured spots in the national top ten, showcasing Montgomery County’s enduring status as a hub of cultural diversity.
WalletHub’s analysis involved over 500 of the largest cities in the U.S., focusing on three key diversity metrics: ethno-racial diversity, linguistic diversity, and birthplace diversity.
Leading the pack, Germantown achieved the highest overall ranking in the nation with an impressive ethnic diversity score of 72.83. It excelled in ethno-racial diversity, securing the top position, ranked fifth in linguistic diversity, and 100th in birthplace diversity, which contributed to its overall success.
Gaithersburg closely followed, coming in third overall with a score of 72.55. The city ranked ninth in ethno-racial diversity and second in linguistic diversity, further solidifying its reputation as one of the most multilingual places in the country.
Silver Spring took the fourth spot, continuing its legacy of cultural richness fueled by international migration, a variety of languages spoken at home, and a racially diverse population across its neighborhoods.
Completing the representation of Montgomery County in the top ten, Rockville ranked ninth overall and fifth among smaller cities nationwide. It achieved 23rd in ethno-racial diversity, 10th in linguistic diversity, and 38th in birthplace diversity, demonstrating a well-rounded performance across all three diversity categories.
Collectively, these four communities account for nearly half of the top ten most ethnically diverse cities in the nation, highlighting the integral role that diversity plays in the region’s identity. From languages and cultures to culinary experiences, festivals, and community interactions, these rankings resonate with the lived experiences of residents.
