Allegis Group has been recognized as the top private company in Maryland and is one of four firms from the state featured in Forbes’ latest list of America’s Top Private Companies.
Based in Hanover, Allegis Group is a leading talent management firm that employs around 19,000 individuals and reported a revenue of $14.2 billion in its latest fiscal year. The company, established in 1983, secured the 29th position nationally in the ranking of 200 private companies released in mid-December.
To be eligible for inclusion in the list, companies needed to achieve an estimated revenue of at least $3 billion during their most recent fiscal year. For 85 percent of the companies on the list, this fiscal year corresponded to calendar year 2024, while others concluded their fiscal years in October 2025, as noted by Forbes.
Here’s a look at the other top private companies in Maryland and their national rankings:
- Whiting-Turner Contracting, Baltimore (No. 32): Construction | $13.3 billion in revenue | 4,600 employees.
- Perdue Farms, Salisbury (No. 53): Food, drink, and tobacco | $9.8 billion | 20,000 employees.
- Clark Group, Bethesda (No. 90): Construction | $7 billion | 4,400 employees.
- Total Wine & More, Bethesda (No. 105): Retailing | $6 billion | 11,000 employees.
The top of the ranking revealed few surprises. Cargill, an agriculture powerhouse based in Minneapolis, has maintained its number one position for the fifth consecutive year and has held the top spot for 38 out of the 39 years that Forbes has published this ranking.
Among the other notable companies in the rankings throughout its history are Wawa from Pennsylvania (No. 21), SC Johnson from Racine, Wisconsin (No. 38), E&J Gallo Winery from Modesto, California (No. 125), and Crowley Marine from Jacksonville, Florida (No. 167). Additionally, Forbes highlighted that nearly two-thirds of the companies currently listed have been part of the rankings for a decade.
This year, 12 newcomers made their debut on the list, including Sam Alton’s OpenAI (No. 155), the San Francisco-based software company that reported an estimated revenue of $3.7 billion for 2024.
