Discover Exciting Summer Opportunities for Teens in Montgomery County: Fun Activities and Job Openings!

Although school is still in session for many students, Montgomery County’s Department of Recreation has already made significant plans for summer by ensuring that its outdoor pools are open just in time for Memorial Day.

This year, Gabe Albornoz, the director of the Department of Recreation, shared with WTOP that the opening of the pools is merely the beginning of the offerings available to residents this summer.

In light of the current economic landscape, he recognizes that many teens are seeking opportunities for additional income.

“We understand that there’s a greater need for summer employment, and youth employment is an area we are focusing on more this year,” Albornoz stated.

“Currently, many of our camp positions are filled, but we still have openings in our aquatics programs,” he added. “We are continually on the lookout for lifeguards. While certification is required for these roles, we provide assistance with that certification process, and the pay is quite competitive.”

As summer approaches, Albornoz emphasized the importance of developing programming geared toward teenagers, aiming to prevent large unregulated gatherings, often referred to as “teen takeovers.”

“Our goal is to offer a wide variety of programs, especially in areas where transportation can be an obstacle for youth,” he explained.

Additionally, Albornoz noted that older teenagers typically prefer less structured activities.

“Generally, they seek safe spaces to hang out, with caring adults present to supervise and ensure everything is running smoothly,” he remarked. “To cater to this need, we have extended drop-in hours at our recreation centers.”

Montgomery County boasts 23 recreation centers that offer a diverse array of activities, from sports to arts and crafts.

According to Albornoz, successful program development hinges on engaging teenagers for their insights.

“Teens who participate in our Teen Works programs provide valuable feedback about what they find appealing and what would enrich their experience,” he concluded.
