Art with a Heart (AWAH) is inviting individuals of all ages to contribute to the history of Randallstown by helping to create a new public art installation in the Milford Mill Market Square.
The concluding workshop is scheduled for Friday, August 21, during the Liberty Live Concert Series, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
This nearly eight-foot-tall mosaic sculpture will be a centerpiece of a collaborative effort aimed at crafting a welcoming public space that reflects the identity, pride, and resilience of the Randallstown community. Renovations at the shopping center are part of a broader revitalization plan for the Milford Mill Market Square and the Liberty Road Corridor. AWAH has been tasked with designing and creating a sculpture that pays tribute to Randallstown’s rich history and cultural heritage.
Throughout various workshop sessions over the summer, community members have actively participated in the creation of the sculpture, designed to represent Mother Earth. This upcoming event marks the final workshop dedicated to this community mosaic. The original concept for the sculpture was developed by Howard Connelly from Cambridge, Maryland.
The Mother Earth sculpture features a striking female figure advancing while holding a solar-powered lantern aloft. The piece will incorporate stained glass mosaic designs that honor Randallstown’s African-American heritage and celebrate the local Afro-Caribbean culture. The sculpture depicts her in a flowing gown adorned with colorful motifs inspired by fresh produce, celebrating the vibrancy of business and community life at the newly revitalized Milford Mill Market Square.
“Good development attracts the tenants, but it is art that imbues the place with significance,” remarked Josh Rosemore, vice president of development for ARLS Properties. “Mother Earth symbolizes the rich history of the greater Randallstown area through her lantern and features the community’s contributions in her mosaics — making this site a landmark, and landmarks are vital for the sustainability of developments.”
For over 25 years, AWAH has been dedicated to creating community-focused art experiences, contributing to more than 300 public art installations. Their website also boasts an interactive map showcasing the locations of these installations throughout Baltimore. AWAH offers a broad array of art classes across schools, community centers, group homes, shelters, permanent housing facilities, veterans’ facilities, hospitals, and senior living facilities, among others.
This collaborative project is led by ARLS Properties, the Greater Randallstown Community Development Organization (GRCDO), Baltimore County, and various community stakeholders.
The Milford Mill Market Square sculpture project has successfully engaged hundreds of community members as they become co-creators through hands-on mosaic workshops, coinciding with the Liberty Live Concert Series. These free, family-friendly summer concerts, organized by GRDCO, offer an enjoyable atmosphere where neighbors can gather to enjoy live music, food trucks, local vendors, and community engagement. Attendees have contributed tiles and individualized ceramic thumbprints that will be integrated into the final sculpture.
