BALTIMORE, Md. — While many community members in Baltimore were busy preparing for Christmas Eve in the comfort of their homes, a significant number of individuals experiencing homelessness found warmth and shelter at the Beans and Bread Day Center in East Baltimore.
The Beans and Bread Day Center, run by St. Vincent de Paul, acts as an essential resource for those in need during daytime hours. On Christmas Eve, the atmosphere was filled with activity as staff offered critical services to attendees.
“We provide them with a space to sit and enjoy watching TV, something they may rarely experience. Whether they want to relax with videos or focus on job applications, this place serves as a hub for them to regain their footing,” stated Savannah Alford-Jones, a spokesperson for the center.
In addition to offering meals and temporary shelter, the day center provides a range of services, including access to showers, laundry facilities, and computers. Case management services help connect individuals with health resources, housing options, and job opportunities.
For many patrons, the center symbolizes hope during a season that can often feel isolating.
“We don’t always learn the full stories of those we assist, so we can’t be sure if they have family. Our goal is to ensure that while they are here, we provide them with as much support as possible,” Alford-Jones added.
As one of five designated warming centers in Baltimore City, Beans and Bread has extended its hours amid dropping temperatures and a Code Purple alert, now remaining open until 4 p.m. on weekdays.
The center also distributes donated warm clothing, blankets, and cold-weather gear to help clients endure the harsh winter months.
“After some of them leave our facility, we may not know where they go. We hope that even if they have to spend the night outdoors, they at least have something to keep them warm until they return the next morning,” Alford-Jones expressed.
Although the center was closed on Christmas Day and Friday, the staff took the initiative to hand out bags of groceries and personal care items to help clients navigate the holiday weekend. The center is set to reopen on Monday.
