Asia North Festival Celebrates Hospitality and Community in Station North!

Share

The Asia North Festival is set to return to Baltimore’s vibrant Station North Arts District for its eighth consecutive year, taking place from May 1 through May 31.

The festival is jointly organized by the Central Baltimore Partnership (CBP) and Towson University’s Asian Arts & Culture Center. This year’s celebration coincides with APIMEDA Heritage Month, which honors Asian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and Desi American cultures. The festival aims to highlight the evolving identity of the Charles North/Station North neighborhood, renowned for its rich cultural contributions as a Koreatown, arts district, and creative center.

“We are excited to showcase Asia North’s hallmark exhibition at the historic SNF Parkway Theatre, situated at the intersection of North and Charles, the very heart of Station North and Baltimore City,” commented Abby Becker, director of the Station North Arts District, a program of CBP. “In a time often marked by division and isolation, we focus on themes of hospitality, cultural memory, and fostering a sense of belonging.”

The festival will feature a signature exhibition, a variety of community programs, artist discussions, and neighborhood events. This year’s main exhibition, titled “Shoes at the Door,” is curated by Dylan Kaleikaumaka Hill, who serves as the Meyerhoff-Becker Curatorial Fellow at the Baltimore Museum of Art. “Shoes at the Door” explores the concept of hospitality through the lens of cultural diasporas, historical traditions, colonial influences, and celebrations. Attendees can expect to see an array of sculptures, videos, photographs, and community-driven projects that address themes of welcome, displacement, and cultural memory.

“The pieces featured in this year’s exhibition beautifully illustrate the wide range and diversity of hospitality practices and concepts of home, incorporating installations, ceramics, paintings, sculptures, illustrations, and textiles,” Hill stated in a press release.

The Asia North Festival will kick off with an Opening Event on Friday, May 1, from 5 to 9 p.m. at both the SNF Parkway Theatre and Currency Studio. The exhibition “Shoes at the Door” will be open for viewing, accompanied by a range of musical and dance performances curated by host Kandi Wong. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the artists and enjoy the sounds of Korean samulnori and Japanese taiko drums, alongside performances that celebrate the traditional dance of Odissi, as well as contemporary synth and indie-pop music. Light refreshments will be generously provided by the Baltimore Xiamen Sister City Committee.

“Some of the featured artists focus on intergenerational practices related to welcoming guests into our homes, reimagining domestic objects that signify family gatherings and festive meals,” Hill noted. “These works not only evoke feelings of nostalgia and joy but also delve into the complex dynamics of gendered labor and the enduring impacts of colonial history.”

In addition, the Asia North Festival will present the initial design concepts for historic markers associated with “Preserving Baltimore’s Koreatown,” a public history initiative led by artists Phaan Howng and Hayelin Choi. This project aims to document and celebrate the rich social and cultural heritage of Baltimore’s Koreatown.

“Asia North has evolved into a cherished annual tradition each spring in Station North. It is a time for us to welcome new visitors to the Arts District, unite our expanding community, honor the historical significance as home to Baltimore’s inaugural Koreatown, and showcase the extraordinary talents of the artists creating within our city,” Becker concluded.
