Prince George’s County Public Schools is undergoing a leadership shift within its Transportation Department following difficulties experienced at the beginning of the academic year, which resulted in many students facing delays in receiving their bus assignments.
On Sunday, the school district announced that Keba Baldwin will be resigning from his position as director of transportation.
Mark Fossett, who previously served as the chief operating officer for the school system, has been appointed as the acting director and will lead a newly formed transportation transition team.

While the district did not explicitly state that Baldwin was fired, nor did they directly attribute the transportation issues to his departure, PGCPS clarified that he will assist in the transition process.
This leadership alteration occurs as the district reports that it has resolved a backlog affecting approximately 10,000 students who were previously awaiting bus assignments.
“This initiative transcends the immediate issues of the week,” remarked Superintendent Shawn Joseph in a press release. “It aims to establish the necessary systems, capacity, and culture to ensure families receive the dependable service they rightfully expect.”
Transportation staff, alongside a dedicated 27-member surge team, worked throughout the weekend to ensure that all routes were assigned to the students who were initially in the backlog.
According to PGCPS, the surge team will continue to operate as the district addresses new enrollments, change of addresses, and other everyday transportation requests.
Fossett, along with the transition team, will concentrate on stabilizing the bus service, enhancing customer service, and filling urgent vacancies within the department.
The district is also initiating a route optimization phase aimed at correcting routing mistakes, reducing travel times, and improving stop locations.
Updated bus assignments can be accessed through the Chipmunk application, and will also be available via ParentVUE as soon as the system is synchronized.
PGCPS is scheduled to host a telephone town hall for families on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to discuss the current state of transportation operations and to respond to any inquiries.
