BALTIMORE — An ongoing investigation is taking place in downtown Baltimore following a shooting incident involving law enforcement that occurred on Saturday night.
Authorities responded to the scene located on the 300 block of N. Eutaw Street related to this incident.
At 9:35 p.m., a central district police officer was present in the area issuing a parking citation while awaiting a tow truck to remove a vehicle that had suspended and expired tags.
While waiting for the tow truck, the driver of the vehicle, identified as a 29-year-old man, arrived on the scene. Initially, he denied ownership of the vehicle but later acknowledged that he was, in fact, the owner.
The officer informed the driver that the vehicle would be towed but that he was allowed to collect his personal items if he chose to do so.
According to police reports, the man entered the driver’s seat just as the officer moved to the front of the vehicle. A second officer was on the way to assist in blocking the vehicle to prevent its movement.
However, before the second officer could reach the area, the man allegedly shifted the vehicle into drive, striking the officer.
Despite the officer’s commands for him to stop, the man reportedly continued to drive—alternating between backing up and moving forward—dragging the officer for a brief distance before the officer discharged his firearm.
Authorities indicate that the officer fired at least three shots, hitting the man while he was being dragged.
The officer subsequently pulled the man out of the vehicle and provided first aid until emergency medical services arrived. The injured man was then transported to a nearby hospital, where he is currently listed in critical condition.
A crowd gathered at the scene, and officers worked to manage the situation by keeping onlookers away as medical assistance was rendered to the man.
Baltimore City Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that the man was not previously known to law enforcement, although they were informed that his driver’s license had been revoked.
Additionally, the officer involved in the incident was also taken to a local hospital for treatment due to neck and back injuries.
In comments regarding the unfortunate event, Commissioner Worley emphasized that the officer acted in accordance with departmental protocols. He noted, “This is an area that we receive numerous complaints about. If you observe the surroundings, it certainly does not present a clean image. Therefore, we have officers addressing quality-of-life concerns, and incidents like this can arise when individuals fail to comply with police orders.”
