Elkton Vehicle Arsons Linked to Molotov Cocktails: What You Need to Know

ELKTON, Md. — In the early hours just after midnight, a fire erupted outside a residence on St. Pats Circle, leading to the destruction of two vehicles parked nearby.

Master Deputy State Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire reported, “Witnesses described hearing a loud ‘boom,’ which aligns with the suggestion that it may have been caused by a Molotov cocktail.” He further noted that a couple and their young child reside in the home where the incident occurred. “They are unaware of who might have initiated this fire. There are no signs of previous conflict or ill will with anyone; this situation remains a mystery,” he added.

Authorities have obtained surveillance footage from a neighbor’s Ring camera that captures two individuals fleeing the scene shortly after the explosion.

“Currently, our investigators are inclined to believe that the suspects may be two juveniles based on their appearance,” Alkire stated. “The individuals were dressed in dark clothing, including hoodies that obscured their faces.”

The apparently arbitrary nature of this crime has sparked concern among local residents.

“I’ve lived in this house for 33 years, and I’ve never witnessed anything like this before,” said Ted Paugh, a long-time resident.

This event has shed light on a vulnerability that residents rarely consider—leaving their vehicles exposed could make them potential targets for further incidents.

“Some homes have garages, as you’ve observed, but many of us just park either on the street or in our driveways. That’s essentially our only option,” Paugh explained.

“Is there anything you can do to protect your vehicle?”

“Not really. If they decide to strike again, they could move swiftly through these streets and potentially damage several cars before disappearing.”
