Get Ready for the 27th Annual Heritage Days Weekend, June 27-28, 2026, in Montgomery County, Maryland

The highly anticipated Heritage Montgomery will host this exciting event, which is free of charge and showcases over 30 sites focused on history, culture, and outdoor activities throughout Montgomery County. Attendees can expect special hours of operation, demonstrations, and a range of family-friendly activities at each participating site throughout the weekend.

Heritage Days Weekend offers a plethora of activities, including museum tours, engaging exhibits, and live demonstrations. Visitors can also enjoy biking and hiking tours, arts and crafts sessions, and live musical performances, ensuring that there’s something enjoyable for everyone. “Heritage Days is the perfect opportunity for visitors and residents to explore a selection of Montgomery County’s historic sites that are not regularly open to the public,” stated Kelly Groff, President and CEO of Visit Montgomery.

Immerse yourself in the past at the Seneca Schoolhouse Museum, a beautifully restored one-room schoolhouse from the 1880s. Alternatively, head over to the Woodend Nature Sanctuary and learn about the local ecosystems that thrive amidst our rapidly developing suburban landscape.

At the Sandy Spring Museum, you can take part in a lively Bluegrass Jam, enjoy a History Happy Hour, or visit the Josiah Henson Museum & Park to discover the remarkable history of Rev. Josiah Henson, who was formerly enslaved on the Riley plantation in Montgomery County. The museum also features recent archaeological finds and historical insights from its grounds.

Explore the historical significance of Glen Echo Park, once a National Chautauqua Assembly focused on arts, sciences, and literature. Today, it stands as a vibrant hub for visual and performing arts. Visitors can attend performances at award-winning theaters, observe aquatic life at the Aquarium, and explore various artists’ studios dedicated to ceramics, painting, photography, and more. Don’t miss the free screening of Ain’t No Back to a Merry Go Round, a documentary showcasing local activists and their efforts to desegregate public spaces, marking its premiere at Glen Echo Park.

Discover the Latvian Museum, where you can engage in activities such as natural egg dyeing, cheese-making demonstrations, and exploring intriguing exhibits featuring traditional clothing and jewelry.

Step into African American schoolhouses reconstructed to authentically portray historical education. Visit the Boyds Negro School, a one-room school in the Boyds area, and learn about the educational experiences at the Oakley Cabin African American Museum & Park, another historical log cabin. Share in storytelling, hands-on activities, and live performances that bring history to life.

Walk the Underground Railroad Experience Trail at the Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park, where you can delve into exhibits set in a historic 1832 barn that illuminate the region’s agricultural, Quaker, and African American heritage. Alternatively, visit the Button Farm Living History Center to participate in hands-on activities illustrating plantation life and the Underground Railroad in Maryland.

Attend a performance by the Riverworks Wind Ensemble at the Riverworks Art Center, featuring a showcase of resident artists. Gain insights into community narratives that highlight the connection between the C&O Canal and local history.

Marvel at the history of dairy farming at the King Barn Dairy Mooseum, where you can learn to milk a cow, view an interactive map detailing the dairy industry in Montgomery County, churn real butter, and admire a vintage 1919 Ford Model T Milk Truck.
