For Immediate Release: Thursday, October 2, 2025

Upcoming Free Book Giveaways, Author Presentations, and Community Discussions at Local Libraries from October to January

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) is excited to participate in the 2025 “One Maryland One Book (OMOB)” initiative, a statewide reading program coordinated by Maryland Humanities. This initiative aims to unite Marylanders by encouraging them to read and discuss a shared literary work. The activities for this year’s OMOB will occur from now until January 31, 2026.

OMOB stands out as Maryland’s only comprehensive community reading program. Each year, Maryland Humanities chooses a single book and invites residents statewide to engage with its themes and participate in discussions. This program is designed to promote connection, learning, and dialogue among communities throughout the state.

The theme for this year, What We Collect, What We Tell, inspires readers to contemplate the narratives, histories, and cultures that contribute to their identities and communities.

The selected book for 2025 is Kin: Rooted in Hope by Carole Boston Weatherford, illustrated by Jeffery Boston Weatherford. Through a blend of poetry, art, and personal storytelling, the authors explore their family’s lineage while revealing the shared histories of Maryland and the nation. Their work emphasizes the connection between personal recollections and collective history, resonating with this year’s theme.

County Executive Marc Elrich noted, “The ‘One Maryland One Book’ program exemplifies how libraries serve to unite individuals through shared learning and understanding. This year’s choice, Kin: Rooted in Hope, offers a vital opportunity to reflect on our state’s and country’s rich, albeit complicated, history. By exploring the past and actively listening to each other’s stories, we can gain a deeper understanding of our present and pave the way for our community’s future.”

Throughout the months of October to January, MCPL will offer book discussions and related programming suitable for all age groups. All events will be free of charge, although some may require prior registration. Residents can find the complete calendar of events on the MCPL website.

MCPL warmly invites all residents of the county to participate, whether by reading, attending events, joining in discussions, or exploring related resources.

Additional Information:

  • MCPL branches hosting OMOB discussions will have a limited supply of Kin: Rooted in Hope available for attendees. These copies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Maryland Humanities will conduct a statewide author tour extending through mid-November.
  • Maryland Humanities offers free discussion guides, activity suggestions, and educational resources accessible to both educators and community organizations.
