On Wednesday, authorities arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with the vandalism at Bradley Hills Elementary, which included references to the 2012 Sandy Hook mass shooting.

The graffiti, which raised serious concerns, appeared on school grounds and prompted a swift response from law enforcement. The graffiti made clear references to the individual responsible for the Sandy Hook massacre.

Additionally, a shed on the school property had been set ablaze days earlier. Authorities confirmed that the teenage suspect, who attends Walt Whitman High School, faces charges related to both incidents.

According to a police news release, the teenager was taken into custody on Wednesday morning. A subsequent search of his residence yielded items deemed to have evidential significance.

The young suspect is now facing multiple charges including two counts of second-degree arson, first-degree malicious burning, malicious destruction of property, and making threats of mass violence. He also faces a charge for tampering with physical evidence.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich addressed the situation, stating, “These incidents have unsettled the community, causing fear and anxiety for families with children at the school, staff members, and local residents. While we do not yet understand the motivations behind these alarming actions, it’s crucial that we treat them seriously.”

Police will maintain increased patrols around Bradley Hills Elementary as a precaution, but assured the community that there is “no ongoing threat to the school or the public” related to the incident.

The Montgomery County Police Department’s Second District, which includes Bethesda, is overseeing the case, which will be handled by the Department of Juvenile Services.
