Exciting Changes Ahead: Montgomery County Public Libraries Update Sunday Service Options Starting January 11, 2026!

Share

For Immediate Release: Monday, December 1, 2025

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) has announced significant changes to its Sunday service schedule, effective January 11, 2026. In an effort to maintain consistent staffing and sustainable operations, MCPL will reduce the number of libraries that open on Sundays, while also enhancing programming to better serve the community.

The libraries that will remain open on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. are:

  • Brigadier General Charles E. McGee (Silver Spring)
  • Connie Morella (Bethesda)
  • Gaithersburg
  • Germantown
  • Olney
  • Rockville Memorial
  • Wheaton
  • White Oak

This streamlined Sunday schedule will enable MCPL to offer a wider array of programs, including engaging reading events for children, activities tailored for teens, and various special events. Each geographical area will still have at least one library open on Sundays, ensuring that they can provide necessary services with expanded staffing. Library leaders acknowledge the importance of serving the community, including older adults, while ensuring accessibility throughout Montgomery County.

“Montgomery County Public Libraries is dedicated to providing outstanding service to our residents,” stated MCPL Director Darcell Graham. “Adjusting our Sunday hours is part of our ongoing commitment to improve efficiency and respond to the evolving needs of the community. We are grateful for the public’s ongoing support and are eager to hear feedback as we navigate this transition.”

In addition to the changes in branch hours, MCPL’s electric outreach van will continue to provide select services in neighborhoods where libraries will be closed on Sundays. The van comes equipped with deployable shelving, which allows customers to browse available materials, manage their accounts, and return borrowed items conveniently.

The community is encouraged to express their thoughts regarding this change through a dedicated feedback form available on the library’s website, as well as on MCPL’s Facebook and X pages.
