HOWARD COUNTY, Md. — In honor of Women’s History Month, a local veteran is transforming her military experiences into a mission of healing, establishing a space that she believes she once longed for.
Laray Abraham dedicated 12 years to the Air National Guard, embarking on her military journey at the age of 19. Her service took her from Maryland’s Martin State Airport to Andrews Air Force Base, and included deployments related to Desert Storm, allowing her to serve across both the country and overseas.
However, she acknowledges that her journey was not without challenges, particularly as a woman of color navigating a predominantly male field.
“It can be tough when there aren’t many people who look like you. That aspect can be quite challenging,” Abraham remarked.
She attributes much of her growth to a mentor, Sergeant Anderson, one of the few women to rise to a higher rank, who provided valuable guidance during her early years. Nevertheless, she emphasizes that much of her resilience stemmed from her own determination to excel and overcome various obstacles.
“I just had it in me to strive for excellence and to enhance my capabilities,” said Abraham.
After her military service, Abraham faced yet another hurdle: the challenge of life after the military.
“I felt quite anxious… all I was familiar with from age 19 was the military environment.”
This uncertainty eventually led her to a career in healthcare, where she worked as a dental hygienist for several years. However, a personal health scare dramatically altered her path—she received a diagnosis of a rare form of skin cancer that had initially gone unnoticed. This experience ignited her passion for wellness, ultimately leading to the creation of LaRaydiance Wellness Spa Boutique.
Today, her spa offers much more than skincare services. Abraham emphasizes focusing on the underlying causes of health issues, addressing stress, lifestyle, and overall well-being, all while nurturing a sense of community.
“We strive to provide a truly safe environment for individuals to converse and receive genuine support,” she explained.
This mission holds special significance for veterans and military families, who often contend with feelings of isolation, frequent relocations, and the complexities of transitioning to civilian life.
“I wish I had a space like LaRaydiance for support during my transitions… a refuge.”
For military spouse Erica Hechinova, LaRaydiance has proven to be just that.
After relocating to Maryland with a newborn and lacking a support network, she found starting anew to be one of the most difficult aspects of military life.
“The hardest part is the move… rebuilding friendships with each relocation is challenging,” she remarked.
However, she states that discovering the spa transformed her experience, providing not just services but a true sense of community.
“I found more than just radiance; I discovered a supportive network here.”
Now a loyal client for several years, Hechinova views her visits as more than simply self-care; they represent a vital emotional support system.
“I leave feeling rejuvenated and invigorated… it’s a fabulous experience every time,” she shared.
She believes Abraham’s military background enriches the spa’s atmosphere, as it cultivates a deeper understanding of the struggles faced by families like hers.
“She knows firsthand what families endure throughout this journey,” Hechinova noted.
For Abraham, fostering these connections aligns perfectly with her purpose. She finds fulfillment in creating a warm, supportive atmosphere.
“It feels like I am fulfilling my mission… to offer them genuine care and love.”
As Women’s History Month unfolds, she hopes her narrative serves as an inspiration for others, particularly those women who may feel overlooked or isolated.
“It’s crucial to celebrate women… others need to know that there is a place for us,” she asserted.
She emphasizes the importance of representation—not merely for acknowledgment, but for those who will follow.
“If I can achieve this, so can they… they are just as needed as we are.”
This message, deeply rooted in her military service and her business endeavors, illustrates that for many veterans, their missions simply evolve over time.
From serving on the frontlines to offering rejuvenating treatments, Abraham continues her commitment to helping others feel valued, supported, and at home.
