ROCKVILLE, MD — A local pet adoption center is celebrating as the community stepped up to help the shelter reach its target number of adoptable pets.
The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center informed Patch that they successfully reduced their dog population to 76 after facing a “critical capacity” situation due to a recent influx of animals.
Maria Anselmo, a spokesperson for MCASAC, shared that in addition to 18 dogs being adopted in the past few days, 10 dogs found temporary homes with foster families since the shelter’s urgent appeal was made last Friday.
Check out the adorable Wilbur, estimated to be around 10 years old, alongside Chanel, a 4-year-old cuddle enthusiast. Both dogs are currently in foster care.
In their initial message to the community, the shelter highlighted the urgent need for adopters and foster homes for their larger dogs, especially after taking in 29 dogs within just two days.
Anselmo noted that compared to the same period last year, the shelter has experienced a 20% rise in dog surrenders.

If you have room in your home or know someone searching for a furry companion, Anselmo mentioned that the shelter will host a special March Madness Dog Adoption event.
This event is scheduled for March 28, featuring reduced adoption fees of only $16. Keep an eye on the MCASAC for more details regarding the time and location.
The shelter, located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood, is closed on Wednesdays.
Throughout the week, except Wednesdays, the shelter operates from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. On weekends, potential adopters can visit from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
