A gas leak led to a significant explosion at a construction site in Calverton, Maryland on Friday night, which resulted in one person being taken to the hospital and a nearby power line being downed.

According to a post shared on X by Prince George’s County Fire and Rescue, the incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. in the vicinity of Powder Mill Road and Cherry Hill Road.

A representative from Prince George’s Fire confirmed that Washington Gas was responding to a gas leak at the time of the explosion.

Emergency officials confirmed one individual was taken to a nearby hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Early Saturday morning, 7News reporter Tom Roussey informed WTOP that crews conducting work on a water main in the area struck a gas line during the day.

“Washington Gas was summoned, and the fire department was on-site monitoring as they addressed the gas leak,” Roussey explained. “Then, at approximately 10:15, something ignited the gas, resulting in a large explosion.”

The fire is still ongoing, prompting officials to caution the public to avoid the vicinity.

Roussey noted that Washington Gas was actively working to stop the flow of gas and would allow the fire to burn itself out.

Currently, both directions of the surrounding roads are closed.
