Our Being is Being in Time

Our Being is Being in Time

Tuesday, January 27 :: 6-8pm
@ Charm City Cultural Cultivation

Our Being is Being in Time invites you on a cross-temporal sonic and visual expedition that delves into themes of memory, individual agency, and societal evolution. Guided by a repeated mantra from the John Akomfrah: The Hour Of The Dog exhibition, you’ll find yourself pondering: Who do we become in the space that separates who we are now and who we aspire to be?

This gathering, curated by Xavier Walker, integrates archival materials from local and national Black archives to foster engagement. Attendees can expect reflective activities, herbal concoctions, and two archive-centered soundscape performances led by Xavier Walker and MUSE(O)FIRE, compelling the audience to actively participate in a shared experience.

John Akomfrah: The Hour Of The Dog is currently being showcased at the Baltimore Museum of Art until February 1, 2026. This exhibition features Akomfrah’s multi-channel film that weaves together various viewpoints of young activists during the U.S. Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Utilizing a blend of archival footage, still images, and newly filmed content, enhanced by immersive sound design, Akomfrah’s work ignites dialogues between history and contemporary issues, shining a light on themes of memory, time, and societal change.

The BMA’s exhibition of the film includes an illustrated timeline developed alongside community partners, which investigates how civil rights movements in Baltimore and Maryland have catalyzed nationwide transformation.

Rooted/Growing

Rooted/Growing | Reception

Thursday, January 29 :: 5-8pm
@ MICA Decker Gallery, Fox Building

The Exhibition Development Seminar (EDS) Bicentennial Exhibition Rooted/Growing celebrates two centuries of artistic endeavor by acknowledging the interwoven journeys of MICA and Baltimore. Their relationship thrives on resilience and transformation. MICA has long served as a springboard for aspiring artists, offering crucial support and opportunities for them to nurture their practices. In this context, artists have the chance to sow the seeds of their creativity in fertile ground, encouraged to flourish and explore.

As a vibrant hub for diverse creators, Baltimore features artists across various disciplines, from sculpture to street art. It’s only fitting that the city serves as a nurturing environment for artistic innovation. This exhibition seeks to bring together an array of selected artists, creatives, and community leaders to foster a dynamic dialogue about the past, present, and future of MICA and the broader Baltimore arts community.

The exhibition invites everyone to ponder MICA’s legacy while discussing the ongoing significance of creating and sustaining art in Baltimore. It presents a vision for the future—one informed by a tradition of innovation and creativity. Viewers are encouraged to reflect on the reciprocal relationship between artists and the Baltimore community, emphasizing how their shared ecosystem enhances communal well-being. Each element of this exhibition encourages visitors to experience these narratives not as fixed recollections, but as vibrant intersections and collaborations across generations and communities.
