A person of interest has been apprehended following a series of shootings that occurred on Sunday in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. These incidents resulted in the death of one individual and left two others injured.
The sequence of events unfolded early in the morning, shortly after 7 a.m., when Prince George’s County Police received a call regarding an unresponsive man at Watkins Park Plaza. Upon arrival, they discovered 65-year-old Joseph Holt III, a resident of Upper Marlboro, deceased in his vehicle from a gunshot wound.
Later that evening, around 8:10 p.m., officers responded to a report of gunfire on the 12000 block of Darlenen Street. Here, they found a man shot inside his car.
As investigations continued, authorities located a second victim, a woman, in her vehicle on Cambleton Drive. She sustained a gunshot wound to her abdomen, as confirmed by Police Chief George Nader.
Both victims were transported to the hospital, with the man reported to be in stable condition, while the woman was in critical but stable condition.
Additionally, a third individual in the vicinity had been targeted and shot at while in their vehicle, but fortunately, they were not struck, as indicated in a police news release.
Law enforcement quickly canvassed the surrounding area and located a person of interest on Cambleton Drive. A rifle, which has since been linked to the earlier shooting of Holt, was also recovered at the scene.
“We have apprehended the individual we believe is responsible for these shootings,” Chief Nader stated.
Authorities do not think the shooter had any connection to the victims involved.
“We do not believe this is a case similar to the D.C. Sniper incidents, but we are confident that one individual is accountable for all of the shootings,” Nader explained.
He reassured the community, stating that there is currently no ongoing threat. The motive for these shootings is still under investigation.
“While there could have been robberies involved, we will continue to examine any other relevant aspects of this individual’s history,” he added.
Nader also praised the courage of the officers who swiftly apprehended the person of interest.
“If they had not acted with such urgency, we might not have caught this individual as quickly, and we can only speculate on the possible outcomes,” he remarked.
