A woman was rushed into surgery following a tragic incident and remains in critical condition, police reported on Friday afternoon.
A mother from Bowie, Maryland, was shot in the head by her partner during a heated argument related to school supplies for their children on Thursday. At the time of the shooting, she was holding their 2-month-old baby, as revealed in the charging documents.
The suspect, 41-year-old Kimball Hinton Jr., is facing multiple charges including first- and second-degree attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, along with three counts of reckless endangerment and various firearm-related offenses.
During the incident, one of the couple’s six children, all present in their home on Myrtle Avenue in Bowie, placed a call to the police at 4:16 p.m., reporting that her father had just shot her mother. Hinton himself made another call two minutes later, confessing to the shooting.
When law enforcement officers arrived at the residence, they found Hinton outside in the front yard.
“I shot her, the gun is in the mailbox,” he reportedly told officers upon their arrival, according to the documents.
Officers took Hinton into custody and proceeded inside the house, where they discovered the woman lying on the master bedroom floor with a gunshot wound to her head.
Argument over school supplies escalated in front of children
According to the charging documents, Hinton cooperated with law enforcement and waived his Miranda rights, sharing details about the incident.
He explained that the argument arose over the couple’s difficulties in providing necessary back-to-school supplies for their six children. Hinton stated that during the dispute, his partner was seated on their bed holding their infant, while another child attempted to intervene.
Despite believing he had “every opportunity to leave the situation,” Hinton recounted that he went back to the bedroom and fired two shots from his pistol. He realized she had been hit when he heard her making groaning sounds.
Following the shooting, Hinton stated that he exited the house, placed the firearm in the mailbox, called 911, and waited for police to arrive.
Further details in the charging documents reveal that Hinton is prohibited from owning a firearm due to prior convictions, which include an assault charge from 2009 and a weapons violation from 2008.
