The Shark is Broken

Friday, January 9 | Runs through February 1
@ Vagabond Players

Written by Ian Shaw & Joseph Nixon
Directed by Stephen Deininger

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic film, dive into the humorous and dramatic tensions experienced during the making of Jaws. This play explores the often humorous interactions between actors Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider. Set mainly aboard the stranded Orca amidst production delays, it captures the complexities of ego clashes, artistic tension, and unexpected bonds—while echoing the overarching themes of fear, fame, and legacy that Jaws so profoundly captured. This piece serves as both a heartfelt tribute to a cinematic masterpiece and a poignant reflection on the pressures of creativity in the spotlight.

Gulnur Tuluoglu: Sacrifice Of Home | Opening Reception

Friday, January 9 | 5-7pm
@ Gallery CA

Gallery CA is excited to unveil Sacrifice of Home, a solo exhibition featuring the work of Gulnur Tuluoglu, on display from January 9th to February 7th, 2026. This body of work combines paintings and mixed media to explore the complex identity of a second-generation immigrant. By revisiting personal family photos and introducing her unique symbols, Tuluoglu reflects on the reinterpretation and preservation of cultural heritage.

Central to the exhibition is the poignant imagery of the lamb sacrifice (‘Kurban’ in Turkish), drawn from the Abraham and Isaac narrative. In this tale, Abraham is tested and offers a sheep at the last moment instead of his son. Tuluoglu interprets this moment through the lens of her family experiences during Eid al-Adha, blending personal connection with broader themes. The lamb transcends the ritual, prompting viewers to contemplate the influences of fear versus faith in moments of sacrifice and the potential outcomes of such choices.

While depicting scenes commonly associated with community and celebration, Tuluoglu’s work conveys an underlying tension—highlighting the sense of isolation that can arise when traditions are upheld from afar and the personal sacrifices of leaving one home for another.
