MECHANICSVILLE — Local racer Kelly Clontz from Hughesville is set to make her debut in Pro Stock Motorcycle at Maryland International Raceway this weekend. This event marks the first appearance of the NHRA Mission Drag Racing Series at the Southern Maryland track for the inaugural NHRA Potomac Nationals presented by JEGS.
Clontz, who competes on her Steamfitters UA Local 602/ArchKey Solutions Suzuki, has deep roots at MIR, where she previously secured numerous track championships before moving up to compete at the national level. Anticipation is high, with hundreds of family, friends, and local fans expected to fill the grandstands for this exciting three-day event, which brings national drag racing to Southern Maryland for the very first time.
“This facility has always been top-notch, and I think everyone is excited about this weekend,” expressed Clontz. “You can feel the energy building ever since the announcement was made that NHRA would be coming here. There’s a lot of excitement, and I believe everyone is in for a treat.”
Reflecting on her journey, Clontz said, “I used to sell t-shirts at the souvenir stand here. Royce Miller, the owner of Maryland International Raceway, runs a fantastic operation. I grew up with his children at the track, and witnessing this event is truly fulfilling. NHRA and MIR make a great partnership, and I expect it to be an incredible weekend.”
The Potomac Nationals is the seventh event out of 20 in the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season, featuring all four Mission Foods classes: Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle. Fans can catch elimination coverage on FOX Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. Qualifying rounds are scheduled for Friday at 1:30 and 4 p.m. and Saturday at 12:30 and 3 p.m., while final eliminations kick off Sunday at 11 a.m.
For Clontz, the home-track advantage means a lot. She and her husband Chris have been making solid progress on their Vance & Hines Suzuki throughout the season and are eager for a strong performance in front of the enthusiastic Southern Maryland motorcycle crowd.
“Chris gives me a great bike, and it’s all about being consistent and focused,” Clontz stated. “For all the people who support us, having this opportunity is incredibly special. It’s going to be a big event, and the whole community will be involved. I know what needs to be done, and I’m determined to achieve it.”
This weekend also celebrates the NHRA’s 75th anniversary at MIR, featuring notable appearances, including three-time Top Fuel world champion Shirley Muldowney, along with a tribute to her groundbreaking career. On Sunday, the first 4,000 attendees will receive a complimentary, limited-edition NHRA pennant.
The local racing community in Southern Maryland has consistently supported MIR, and the NHRA’s debut is seen as a testament to the track’s esteemed reputation. Clontz is aware that the local fans will inject additional energy into the Pro Stock Motorcycle class.
The event will also showcase the broader NHRA roster. Top Fuel points leader Shawn Langdon aims for his third consecutive victory against a fierce lineup that includes teammates Doug Kalitta, Tony Stewart, Leah Pruett, Justin Ashley, Antron Brown, and Tony Schumacher.
In the Funny Car category, Ron Capps and J.R. Todd are currently tied for the points lead, with Matt Hagan close behind. Other key contenders include Chad Green, Jordan Vandergriff, and Alexis DeJoria.
Meanwhile, in Pro Stock, reigning champion Dallas Glenn leads the pack, with competitors such as Matt Hartford, Greg Anderson, Erica Enders, and the Coughlin brothers also making strong showings.
Clontz will face a challenging Pro Stock Motorcycle field, including points leader and reigning champion Richard Gadson, alongside hopefuls Gaige Herrera, Angie Smith, Chase Van Sant, John Hall, Jianna Evaristo, Clayton Howey, and Steve Johnson.
The Potomac Nationals promise to draw national attention and economic benefits for Southern Maryland. Local officials from St. Mary’s County and business owners are promoting this event as a significant tourism boost for the region.
