BALTIMORE — Morgan State University is proud to announce a generous $2 million donation from alumna Vianna Briscoe, aimed at establishing the new Vianna Briscoe and Timothy Weldon Endowed Scholarship Fund.
Briscoe, who proudly graduated from this esteemed HBCU in 1969, has created this scholarship in memory of her late husband, Timothy Weldon, a 1970 Morgan graduate. The scholarship is designed to support students pursuing degrees in key fields such as engineering, mathematics, city and regional planning, and entrepreneurship.
This significant contribution represents the second-largest investment from an alum in the history of Morgan State University, following a remarkable $20 million donation from Calvin E. Tyler Jr. and his wife, Tina, in 2021.
Dr. David Wilson, the president of Morgan State University, remarked, “This remarkable gift from Ms. Briscoe embodies the essence of Morgan: excellence, loyalty, and an unwavering faith in the transformative power of education.” He continued, “Through this endowed scholarship, she is not only providing vital financial assistance but also fostering access and opportunities for bright students in STEM fields, preparing them to shape industries, drive innovation, and uplift communities. Her generosity empowers Morgan students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college, to concentrate on their academic success instead of financial concerns.”
The scholarship aims to bridge the wealth gap by eliminating financial obstacles and enhancing access to higher education, particularly in the high-demand areas of STEM and related fields.
Students who have been accepted into their programs and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5, along with demonstrating financial need, can receive full funding through this endowment. Recipients can renew their awards throughout their time at the university as long as they continue to meet all eligibility criteria. Additionally, student-athletes in good academic standing may also qualify.
Students majoring in the following areas are eligible for this scholarship:
- Mathematics
- Various Engineering disciplines, such as Industrial, Civil, Electrical, Transportation Systems, Mechatronics, and Environmental Engineering
- City and Regional Planning (through the School of Architecture and Planning)
- Entrepreneurship
