Massive Blaze Engulfs Maryland Junkyard, Billowing Black Smoke into the Sky

A massive fire engulfing over 100 vehicles at a junkyard in Hollywood, Maryland, raged for nearly five hours before firefighters were able to get it under control on Saturday.

The Bay District Volunteer Fire Department reported receiving multiple 911 calls just before 4 p.m., alerting them to the blaze at Maximum Auto Body, located in the 43900 block of Commerce Avenue.

Some callers described the scene, remarking on the loud explosions and the sight of thick, black smoke billowing up into the sky.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered that the fire was affecting a stack of vehicles. They noted that various “gas or fuel sources” may have intensified the flames, complicating their efforts, according to the fire department.

Fire protection teams from nearby Hollywood, Solomons, and the Naval District Washington collaborated to combat the blaze. Workers from the junkyard also lent a hand, operating heavy machinery to help separate the burning cars and facilitate the firefighting efforts.

To effectively tackle the fire, a crash truck from the Naval District Washington Fire Department deployed a powerful deck gun, capable of launching approximately 3,000 gallons of water at once, aiding significantly in dousing the flames.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported in connection with this incident.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office has initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire.
