Maryland Lawyer Tom Goldstein Faces Deception Allegations in Tax Trial January 19, 2026 By Local Germantown News Team Share FacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsApp Key Takeaways: Prosecutors claim that former Supreme Court attorney Tom Goldstein concealed millions in poker winnings. Goldstein is facing 16 charges, including tax evasion and falsifying loan applications. The defense contends Goldstein relied on his accountants and lacked any criminal intent. The federal trial is taking place in Greenbelt and is expected to last four weeks. GREENBELT – A jury was told on Thursday that distinguished Washington attorney Tom Goldstein led a dual life marked by deceit, linked to his activities as a high-stakes poker player. This opening statement comes as the trial begins for the attorney who has argued over 40 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. During the proceedings in the Washington suburb of Greenbelt, a twelve-member jury heard the prosecution’s initial arguments and testimonies from witnesses. The U.S. Justice Department has accused Goldstein of not declaring millions in poker winnings, providing false information on loan documents, and making questionable payments through his law firm, Goldstein & Russell. Goldstein has pleaded not guilty to all charges. “These poker earnings supported an increasingly extravagant lifestyle for Mr. Goldstein,” stated prosecutor Hayter Whitman during his opening remarks to the jury. “This case revolves around Mr. Goldstein’s decisions and his fraudulent actions.” Plea Deal Rejections Goldstein, who also launched the SCOTUSblog news website dedicated to the Supreme Court, has turned down a plea deal from the Justice Department on two separate occasions. In the defense’s initial arguments, Goldstein’s attorney, Stephany Reaves, asserted, “The evidence will demonstrate that the government has it wrong.” Reaves emphasized that Goldstein consistently acted with integrity, relying on the expertise of his accountants and the management of his law firm. She maintained that the evidence will not substantiate the prosecution’s claims of intentional wrongdoing. “He was a dedicated attorney, managing his own practice while arguing cases at the Supreme Court,” Reaves remarked, indicating that prosecutors selectively highlighted transactions from a vast array of dealings to imply criminal activity. Goldstein is up against 16 criminal charges, which include tax evasion, aiding and abetting in the preparation of fraudulent tax returns, willful failure to pay taxes, and making untrue statements on loan applications. The trial is anticipated to last approximately four weeks under the judicial guidance of U.S. District Judge Lydia Kay Griggsby. Goldstein’s indictment in January 2025 caused a stir in Washington’s legal circles, where he was regarded as one of the leading appellate attorneys in the nation. A prosecutor mentioned that “Spider-Man” star Tobey Maguire, who has previously compensated Goldstein $500,000 for legal services, may take the stand during the trial. The prosecutor noted that this money was intended for an individual to whom Goldstein owed a poker debt. Representatives for Maguire, who is not implicated in any wrongdoing, were not immediately available for comment. The government’s inaugural witnesses included Alec Gores, a California businessman who lost significant stakes to Goldstein in 2016, totaling $26 million. Gores, the CEO of Gores Group investment firm, recalled coordinating with Goldstein prior to matches to ensure the existence of financial guarantees. Goldstein participated in the team that represented Democrat Al Gore in the contentious legal battle that led to the Supreme Court determination granting Republican George W. Bush victory in the 2000 U.S. presidential elections. His past clients also feature major entities like Google and Epic Games, the creators of “Fortnite.” He officially retired from his legal practice in 2023. The trial will resume on Tuesday.
