“It’s akin to holding a corn pocket filled with cheese and meats,” Co-owner Luis Dams explained. “It’s a staple in our daily lives back in Venezuela.”
Unable to return home to assist relatives and friends after the catastrophic quakes along the coast, the restaurant owners are mobilizing their efforts by gathering donations at their establishment.
“I’m still in shock, to be honest. Witnessing my country in this state is incredibly disheartening. I’ve had sleepless nights worrying. Thankfully, most of my family is here, but many friends and others we know remain in Venezuela,” Dams remarked.

“Thank God, they’re safe. However, we still feel an obligation to assist because many individuals are in dire need right now, and time is crucial,” Behrans added.
A regular patron at Arepi, Behrans expressed his gratitude when he learned that the restaurant’s owners had initiated donation collections the day after the earthquakes struck.
“I was hoping to see the Baltimore community come together; it was heartwarming to witness their response,” Behrans stated.
According to Dams, the restaurant is collecting items such as clothing, medical supplies, and various essentials. His mother has been in touch with an organization in Florida that will facilitate the delivery of these items to Venezuela.
“Tents and sleeping bags are desperately needed, as many people have lost everything and are forced to sleep on the streets,” Dams explained. “For the past 30 years, we have never relied on our government in Venezuela for assistance.”
The need for support is particularly urgent for individuals who have endured years of hardship.
“There’s little help from the government; it’s solely dependent on the people there, so just imagine that,” Behrans remarked. “We pray to God that this marks the end of their suffering.”

“The response has been remarkable; people have shown incredible generosity,” Dams shared. “Our storage is overflowing with clothing, medical supplies, and essential items ready for shipment to Miami.”
