Will Jawando, a member of the Montgomery County Council and the anticipated Democratic nominee for county executive, experienced a heart attack over the weekend while playing basketball. The incident occurred on Saturday, prompting immediate medical attention.
According to his office, the 43-year-old Jawando was taken to George Washington University Hospital, where he underwent a successful procedure to insert a stent. His medical team has reported that he is expected to make a full recovery.
In a statement released on Monday, Jawando expressed gratitude for the swift actions of friends and the medical staff at the hospital. “Councilmember Jawando and his family are grateful to God for the friends who acted quickly and to the exceptional doctors, nurses and staff at The George Washington University Hospital,” the statement noted. The family also appreciated the support and prayers from the community and supporters across Maryland.
Jawando is anticipated to be discharged later this week and will focus on recovery at home. Current County Executive Marc Elrich, who is term-limited, extended his well wishes, encouraging Jawando to take the necessary time to rest and heal. “My thoughts are with Michele, their children, and the entire Jawando family,” Elrich stated.
Despite the recent health scare, Jawando’s office indicated that he may adjust his schedule but plans to be prepared for the upcoming November election against Republican candidate Esther Wells. Jawando secured his position in the Democratic primary in June with 40% of the vote, leading over fellow Council Members Andrew Friedson and Evan Glass, who received 34% and 22%, respectively. His primary win positions him favorably for the general election in a predominantly Democratic county.
