The Harmer’s Town Art Center, envisioned as a major arts hub and incubator in Havre de Grace, is set to break ground later this year.
The nonprofit organization, Harmer’s Town Art Center Inc., announced on July 7 that it will commence Phase II of the construction project. This phase entails the demolition of the current structure to make way for a new facility spanning 26,400 square feet, with plans for completion targeted by the end of 2027, as detailed in an official release.
HTAC Inc. envisions the new art center as a dynamic economic hub that will bring together arts, history, and community in the heart of Havre de Grace’s lively arts district.
According to the organization, the ongoing construction will not impact the accessibility or functionality of the neighboring Graw Alley Art Park.
“Our aim is to develop a top-tier arts and history tourism destination for Havre de Grace, Harford County, and the greater Mid-Atlantic region,” stated Eileen Rehrmann, Vice President of HTAC Inc. “We believe this will foster creativity, cultural enrichment, and community involvement.”
Designed by the Baltimore-based firm SM+P Architects, the upcoming facility will feature:
- Art galleries and exhibition spaces
- A museum dedicated to local history
- Classrooms specialized for year-round art instruction and summer camps
- Studios for ceramics, glass arts, 3D arts, textiles, woodworking, and flexible programming
- An expanded community and educational programming area
- An art shop, artist lounge, and gathering spaces
- Design features that are ADA-accessible and energy-efficient
The property where the Harmer’s Town Art Center and Graw Alley Art Park are located was generously donated by Allen Fair, founder and president of BCH Real Estate Specialists, as noted in a release.
Rehrmann revealed that while HTAC has successfully secured federal and state grants, additional funding is needed to finalize the project, particularly for furnishings and operational programs. To address this, the nonprofit has launched a capital campaign seeking to raise an additional $3 million through government, corporate donations, and contributions from community members.
The comprehensive construction project phases are projected to total approximately $10 million. HTAC Inc. has reported that it has raised around 70% of that total, with fundraising efforts ongoing.
Phase II of this ambitious project reflects a larger initiative by local leaders and advocates aimed at establishing a vibrant regional hub for arts, history, culture, education, and tourism in Havre de Grace.
