Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich has addressed the recent shooting incident at a Giant Food store in Germantown, describing it as “serious and frightening” while highlighting the significance of recent investments in public safety.
The incident took place on March 20, 2026, around 8:40 PM at the Giant located on Leaman Farm Road. According to the Montgomery County Police, two armed suspects entered the store, and shortly after, the victim arrived. The suspects began pursuing the victim through the aisles.
The chase led to the front of the store, where many shoppers and staff were present. Amid the turmoil, one suspect fired several shots, hitting the victim. Both suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Authorities have since apprehended two teenagers connected to the incident. Nineteen-year-old Marcus Isaiah Jovon Braithwaite from Germantown and a 16-year-old from Montgomery Village are currently facing charges of attempted first-degree murder.
In his weekly briefing, Elrich acknowledged the gravity of the event and expressed relief that the victim survived. “I want to address the shooting that occurred at the Giant Food in Germantown while I was away. This was a serious and alarming incident, and I’m thankful that the victim is alive,” Elrich stated.
He also praised the prompt response from law enforcement, noting that the Montgomery County Police Department acted swiftly to apprehend the suspects. “I want to commend the quick, coordinated response that helped manage the situation effectively. This week, the Montgomery County Police Department arrested those involved,” he added.
Elrich further recognized the efforts of store employees and customers present during the shooting. “The staff at Giant Food handled an incredibly stressful situation with professionalism, and the customers acted in a way that helped ensure the safety of others,” he remarked.
The County Executive used this incident to emphasize the county’s ongoing investments in public safety, including officer training, technology enhancements, and recruitment initiatives. “This response highlights the importance of the investments we’ve made in public safety. We’ve concentrated on equipping our officers with the training, technology, and support necessary to respond effectively in critical situations,” Elrich stated. “We are also focused on recruiting and retaining officers by offering competitive compensation, as experience and stability are crucial in this field.”
He added that fostering community relationships is essential for effective policing. “Equally important, our officers are integral to this community. They build relationships, understand the neighborhoods they serve, and that trust makes a significant difference when challenges arise,” Elrich explained.
In conclusion, Elrich reaffirmed the county’s dedication to ongoing investments in public safety and community partnerships. “We will continue to make these investments and support our officers, as ensuring public safety requires preparation, collaboration, and a strong bond between law enforcement and the community,” he concluded.
