On Sunday, a significant theft took place in Hyattsville, Maryland, where food tokens valued at approximately $7,500 were stolen from the vehicle of a nonprofit employee, as reported by the D.C.-based organization.
Breadcoin, an innovative organization inspired by the concept of cryptocurrency, provides essential food tokens to individuals in need. These tokens can be exchanged for meals at about 100 participating restaurants and food vendors in the local area. The nonprofit collects the tokens after they are used and compensates the vendors directly.
According to Breadcoin, the initiative allows individuals who lack access to proper kitchen facilities to enjoy meals with dignity.
However, the organization is currently facing challenges following the theft that occurred early Sunday morning when a non-profit employee’s car was targeted, as stated by its CEO.
“(The employee) had just gathered the tokens over the weekend on Friday and Saturday before his vehicle was broken into,” explained Breadcoin CEO Scott Borger in an interview. “He had around 2,400 Breadcoins in his car, which amounts to roughly $7,500 in food value that has now been stolen.”
It is important to note that Breadcoin tokens are fundamentally different from traditional gift cards or vouchers. They lack serial numbers for activation or cancellation, enabling them to be reused like real coins. This means that whoever possesses these tokens can use them to make purchases.
Borger expressed his concern that the thief may not fully understand the value or purpose of what they took.
The local community has swiftly rallied to support Breadcoin during this difficult time.
“We have witnessed numerous expressions of support from the community, with people offering to keep an eye out and showing willingness to donate new tokens to help replenish our resources,” Borger remarked. “This community solidarity has been a hallmark of our existence for the past decade since Breadcoin was established.”
