BEL AIR, Md. — New details have emerged regarding an undercover operation by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office that resulted in the arrest of a lieutenant from the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police.
Matthew N. Mahl, 47, a resident of La Plata, Maryland, faces charges of felony sexual solicitation of a minor.
WMAR-2 News has acquired charging documents that provide insight into the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
In March, a detective initiated an online undercover investigation targeting individuals seeking to exploit minors sexually.
During this operation, the detective discovered a post on Reddit in a subforum designated for “GayYoungOldDating.”
A user named “Introverted42” reportedly posted an advertisement looking for younger individuals, stating, “older bear/chub guy in Maryland looking for younger to get to know.”
Following an investigation, “Introverted42” was identified as Mahl.
The undercover officer first contacted Mahl, posing as “Nate,” a 15-year-old sophomore from Harford County.
Throughout their communication, the two exchanged photos, with Mahl allegedly sending one of himself in police uniform.
As the discussions progressed, Mahl began to engage in sexual conversations with the detective, under the belief that he was speaking to a 15-year-old.
In addition, Mahl sent nude photographs of himself from his workplace.
Charging documents indicate that Mahl was conscious of the significant age difference, even expressing a desire for the date February 11, 2027, which would mark “Nate’s” 16th birthday.
Additionally, Mahl seemed aware of the wrongness of his actions, reportedly stating to “Nate,” “I have it all to lose.”
On another occasion, he expressed concern that he might face consequences for his actions while reassuring “Nate” that he would not get in trouble due to his status as a minor.
On April 3, Mahl allegedly solicited “Nate” for nude photographs, leading to the filing of child sexual solicitation charges against him.

Mahl has served 23 years with the Metropolitan Police Department and held a leadership role overseeing the security of significant events, including presidential escorts.
He is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in Harford District Court for a preliminary hearing on May 15.
The Metropolitan Police Department reported to WMAR-2 News that they were unaware of any ongoing investigation prior to Mahl’s arrest.
Following his arrest, he has been placed on administrative leave.
“The allegations in this case are extremely disturbing and run counter to the principles upheld by the Metropolitan Police Department,” the agency stated. “Once the criminal investigation concludes, the Internal Affairs Division will look into any violations of MPD policy.”
