Baltimore Connector Program Expands Access to Community Resources for Jewish Residents

Share

A program designed to help Jewish residents navigate community services and connections is expanding in Baltimore. Known as the Connector program, the initiative aims to link individuals and families with cultural, educational, and social resources throughout the region.

When Dante Barboy chose to become a Community Connector last fall, his goal was straightforward: to create spaces where young Jewish adults could come together and enjoy fun, everyday activities.

“I aimed to foster community among Jewish individuals through casual events,” Dante shares. “Whether it’s a concert, a movie night, or happy hour, the options are endless.”

The Community Connector program, operated by the Macks Jewish Connection Network, which is part of The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore, facilitates connections between trained community builders like Dante and Jewish individuals in Baltimore. These connectors organize engaging, low-barrier activities—from hiking excursions to Ravens game watch parties—that focus on fostering connections without requiring deep commitments.

For Jason Ellis, a pilot who relocated to Baltimore just seven months ago, this approach has proven effective. “Walking into someone’s home for a Shabbat dinner where you don’t know anyone can be quite daunting,” he notes. “However, attending a bar for a Ravens watch party? At worst, I can enjoy a beer and see what the atmosphere is like. It’s a much easier way to get involved.”

This accessibility has become increasingly crucial, especially in the wake of events on October 7, which significantly altered the experience for many young Jewish adults, leaving them feeling distanced from non-Jewish friends who may not fully grasp their situation.

“Many people lost their sense of community after October 7,” Dante recalls. “We’re not bonding through shared pain, but that experience does unify us. We take a step back, switch gears, and focus on enjoying each other’s company.”

For Jason, the difference has been profound. Through various connector events, he has formed a close-knit group of friends. They engage in activities like pickleball, have traveled together to Israel, and enjoy each other’s company as they navigate life in Baltimore.

Curious to learn more? Dante encourages, “Reach out to us! What we’re creating is something truly unique.”
