Governor Wes Moore has officially declared November 22, 2025, as “American Visionary Art Museum Day” in Maryland to celebrate the museum’s remarkable 30th anniversary this month.

Since its inauguration on November 24, 1995, at 800 Key Highway in Baltimore, the American Visionary Art Museum has served as a creative and educational hub dedicated to self-taught and intuitive art. Recognized by the U.S. Congress as America’s National Museum for Visionary Art, the museum’s grand opening occurred over the Thanksgiving weekend in 1995. To commemorate this milestone in 2025, the museum will host a variety of exciting activities on November 22, as detailed in this link.

“For thirty years, the American Visionary Art Museum has been a shining symbol of creativity, inclusiveness, and imagination, celebrating artists from diverse backgrounds whose work is driven by personal vision rather than formal training,” the governor’s proclamation emphasizes.

“The mission of the American Visionary Art Museum to uplift the intuitive artist alongside their varied perspectives and backgrounds has significantly enriched the cultural fabric of Baltimore and Maryland, inspiring millions of visitors globally…”

“In pursuit of this mission, the American Visionary Art Museum fosters an inclusive environment that honors the contributions and experiences of each artist, employee, volunteer, and visitor, establishing a welcoming space where everyone feels valued and seen…”

“The museum continues to cultivate creativity, compassion, and curiosity through its acclaimed exhibitions, lively community events, and educational initiatives, illustrating that visionary art has the ability to uplift the human spirit and connect us regardless of our differences…”

“The vision of the American Visionary Art Museum—believing that everyone deserves access to a vibrant and creative life—truly encapsulates the essence of Baltimore as a city filled with makers, dreamers, and innovators.”

Governor Moore, along with Lt. Governor Aruna Miller and Maryland Secretary of State Susan Lee, endorsed the proclamation.

To celebrate its birthday, the museum will host an event titled “Cheers to 30 Years: AVAM’s Birthday Bash” on November 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees can look forward to a scavenger hunt, guided tours, a screen-painting demonstration, birthday cake, face painting, opportunities to meet the artists, and various other activities—all included in the admission fee.
